Samuel Hopkins papers, 1796-1823.

These are letters written by General Samuel Hopkins, an associate of Richard Henderson, who served as a general with the Kentucky Militia, a judge, a state legislator, and as U.S. Congressman. Most of Hopkins' letters concern the frontier settlement of Henderson, land dealings, agriculture and agricultural prices, river commerce, and some of his political activities. The majority of the letters were written to Walter Alves of Orange County, North Carolina, who was the son of James Hogg, one of the original members of the Transylvania Company. There are also three letters written by Hopkins to Hogg and one to Colonel Thomas Hart, another original member of the Transylvania Company. There are also two letters present to Samuel Goode Hopkins from his father while the son was studying at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
